Liz's book

Who reads Mabel's House?  If, for some unknown reason, you don't, you should!  Trust me on this one.  Liz has written a book and is giving away advanced copies!  You can enter the giveaway here.

Here's an excerpt from the book...I can't wait to get my hands on it!

Once one has breathed in the deep pungent aroma of sewage, you never again forget the nose-hair singeing, eye clawing, throat gagging experience. It comes over you slowly. You begin to feel like a character in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest as your muscles involuntarily jerk and you run screaming and blowing raspberries. Anything to get away from the mind-numbing stench.
But let me explain.
It was 6:30 a.m. I was standing in my retro pink tiled bathroom trying to open my bleary eyes and ready myself for work. As I stood there, peering into the mirror and wondering what demented nighttime fairy had planted four new wrinkles on my face, I paused and sniffed.
“Matt… what’s that smell?”
Matt staggered from the bedroom in his underwear, eyes half shut. “I don’t smell anything.”
I pointed my nose into the air like a hunting dog. “Seriously? You can’t smell that? Did you go to the bathroom in here earlier? I told you to use the room spray when you do things like that.”
Matt puffed out his bare chest and gathered his pride as best a man can with sleep in his eyes and a small hole in the side of his underwear. “I just woke up!”
I frowned, catching a glimpse of my makeup-less hot-rollers-in-hair state and tried not to think about the fact that I looked fifty instead of twenty-nine. “Well, help me figure this out. Because something smells ripe.”
We sniffed the sink drain and ruled it out as a suspect.
“Is it coming from the toilet?” Matt asked, examining it from top to bottom.
“No, that’s not it,” I snapped. I’m not known for my milk of human kindness in a disaster. Don’t get me wrong. I’m a survivor. I plan on eating my radish like Scarlet and clawing my way out of the nuclear dust while dragging my loved ones with me. But I won’t be doing it with positive phrases and a smile.
“Hon, I just don’t know. We’ll call a plumber after work, maybe it’s coming from under the house.” Matt staggered a little, trying to get past me and out of our tiny bathroom.
“Well, that’s just great,” I moved aside and pulled the shower curtain back so I could perch on the side of the tub and give Matt room to move out the door.
That’s when the full brunt of nastiness filled the air around us, a swirling mix of excrement and acrid stench that would have brought the sewer dwelling Ninja Turtles to their knees. Where the normally slightly-clean-with-a-hint-of-soap-scum bottom of the tub should have been, there sloshed gallons and gallons of brown sewage.
I clutched the front of my sweatshirt and held my breath. Matt began to dry heave.
“Get out and shut the door!” I screamed as we bumbled into the hallway.
“I’ll deal with this,” Matt grabbed my shoulders, trying to talk and hold his breath at the same time.
I could feel my eyes glaze over, the horrors of typhoid and hepatitis in our bathtub filling my mind. But more importantly, I could envision our evaporated savings account. In my mind’s eye I could see the long, gray hallway at the bank. A worker shrouded in a black suit pulled a set of keys from his pocket and unlatched a small locker labeled “Owen Bank Account.” Inside were two small stacks of quarters and a few crumpled dollar bills. It was bleak, not only because the banker with an unimaginative wardrobe gazed at me with an expression that could only be interpreted as “You’re a Big Fat Loser,” but also there was a very definite possibility we wouldn’t be able to pay for a plumber.
I wasn’t necessarily a spend thrift. In fact, I was downright frugal when it came to decorating with thrift store furniture and rewired vintage lamps. But the fact was, we were poor. We were starting out at starter jobs with starter salaries. We were starter adults with a starter bank account.
“Okay,” I nodded numbly, thankful that Matt was taking the lead on such a disastrous biohazard. “But make sure the plumber is super cheap. We don’t have much money!”
I left for work like a wino stumbling through a fog, not really remembering my commute, not really doing any work as I sipped my coffee and stared blankly at the computer screen. A disaster of such gargantuan proportions had previously been unthinkable in my life, and now I found myself attempting to push the image of a vast sea of bathtub poop from my mind. But I was sure of one thing: Anne Shirley never had to get ready for work while breathing raw sewage.

Friday's Fancies - Crazy about boots

It's time for Friday's Fancies!

1. Chiffon top  2. Trousers  3. Boots  4. Bag  5. Bird Ring

Boots are the theme of the week.  Lately I've using riding boots so I wanted change up the style for today's creation.  I think you can wear the ones I picked with many different outfits.  And, they are only $47 to boot...hahaha!  I crack myself up!

While the top, ring, bag, and boots are affordable and from stores I shop at, I'll just have to find a substitute for the pants...they are a bit out of my budget.  I'd definitely get use out of this outfit for multiple occasions: to work, church, a baby shower, and dinner out.  Is this a style you'd wear?  Where would you wear it?

Stop by {long distance loving} for other boot styles!

*I added a Friday's Fancies tab in the header of the blog.  It has links to all of my past creations!

Thankful Thursday

Just a little *Thankful Thursday post for you!

-I'm so thankful for all of the bloggers (new to me) I've met this week
through comments and emails.  I absolutely love that
blogging brings people together and helps form friendships.

-I'm thankful for a beautiful fall morning, being able to walk
Jon to the train, and take Wilma on a long walk around our neighborhood.

-I'm thankful for the fall cookies my parents purchased for Jon and
me at the orchard.  They made a great  snack complete with apple cider!

New running gear!

Guess who got some new running shoes?!?  Yup, this girl!  I was in desperate need of them...aka definitely over my miles with my last pair!

I love the color combo of coral, light blue, and gray...so much fun!

I also scored lululemon's mesh headband for $9 (reg $14).  I took this picture at the gym before class last week...so why is my hair all messed up and why does it look like it should be after class?!

And, my newest friend for my IT band (yes, I still love my Trigger Point roller).  The Moji 360 Palm.  I am in love!  I first saw this back at my girlie race and was instantly sold.  It's FANTASTIC to massage away IT band issues.  It's small, convenient (we'll most likely bring it to Paris), and does the trick!  Thanks to Jon's friend that works for Moji, we were able to score the friends and family deal!

You just slip your fingers through the handle and...

...massage away!  Don't you love the sweats and slipper sock look after my workout?  :)  You're welcome!

Oh, and today is the three year anniversary of the day we got engaged!  I can't believe it was that long ago...it honestly feels like yesterday.

Weekend trip back home to Rockford

Friday evening we went to Art Prize.  We walked all around Grand Rapids and saw some really fun art exhibits.  Just like last year, we really enjoyed it.  The artists are so creative and come up with fantastic ideas.

Unfortunately we couldn't get any closer to the monkeys hanging from the bridge because
they were closing it for a Human Society charity benefit later that night.

We had fun making faces with the mustache exhibit!

Saturday was just a beautiful day.  It was sunny and in the mid 60's.  It was perfect to walk around Rockford's farmers market and sip on a Pumpkin Spice Latte.  After that, I headed over to see my friend and her new baby.  She is so adorable!!!  So tiny and so much hair!  It was really nice to catch up on what's been going on in our lives.

As luck would have it, Laura ended up coming to Rockford Saturday evening (unfortunately she had to attend a funeral) so she came over for a visit.  We played with Lauren and Annie and after they went to bed Kate, Laura, and I played cards and chatted until the wee hours of the night.  Ok, so it was midnight when Laura left, but that's pretty late for us nowadays.  :)  Seeing her two weekends in a row is a treat!

My parents came home from the cabin Sunday morning and headed to the apple orchard with us.  We enjoyed a great lunch and snacked on some donuts...they were still warm and might possibly have been the best donut I've ever had!

Annie showing off her two bottom teeth.

Lauren did not want her picture taken, but I think it ended up being a super cute shot!

The pumpkin is about the size of Annie!

What did you do this weekend?  Anything fall inspired?  Football?  Some baking?

Friday's Fancies - The Cozy Side of Fall

Fall is here!  It's in the low 60's and rainy for the weekend here...yup, that's fall!  And, it's officially fall according to the calendar too!  This week's theme for Friday's Fancies is "the cozy side of fall".  I love comfy clothes during fall...they are great for taking a walk or cozying up with a book on the couch.  Check out the other cozy fall fashions at {long distance loving}.

I'm headed back to Michigan this weekend with my sister and the girls.  We have plans to check out Art Prize, go to the farmers market, stop by the apple orchard, and I get to see one of my friends and her new baby!  Oh, Laura, I saw these riding boots and though of you!

I opened a very fun email this morning!  {av} made me my very own personalized Friday's Fancies banner for The Rest is Still Unwritten...  How sweet is {av}?!?!  I love it!  Thank you lady!

Pizza!

A couple of weeks ago I saw this recipe on Pioneer Woman's new Food Network show and knew I wanted to try it!  We had it last night.  It was pretty good, but I would do some altering next time around.  I would use less fig jam- once we cut the pizza it started oozing out all over!  :)  It was a little bland in some bites so I'd probably use a bit more pepper to help zing it up.  It was so pretty though!

Pioneer Woman's Fig-Prosciutto Pizza with Arugula

2 tablespoons olive oil
Kosher salt
6 to 8 tablespoons fig spread or jam (I would use less next time around)
12 ounces fresh mozzarella, sliced thin
Freshly ground black pepper
6 ounces thinly sliced prosciutto
1 bunch washed and rinsed arugula
1 cup shaved Parmesan

Preheat the oven to 500 degrees F. Arrange the oven rack in the lowest position.

For the topping: Roll out the pizza dough on a lightly floured surface as thinly as possible Dough should be roughly 17 by 10 inches. Place on a large baking sheet (I used my round pizza pan). Drizzle lightly with the olive oil and sprinkle lightly with salt. Spread the fig spread all over the surface of the dough. Lay the slices of mozzarella all over the surface of the pizza crust. Sprinkle lightly with salt and pepper. Bake the pizza until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly, 12 to 15 minutes.

Remove from the oven and immediately drape the prosciutto slices over the hot pizza. Sprinkle generously with the arugula and Parmesan shavings. Cut into wedges or squares and serve immediately!

Laura & Lauren with a twist of an apple pie!

I love weekends with family and friends...who doesn't?  This one was full and family and friend company and it was perfect!

Early evening on Friday we had a surprise birthday celebration for my mom.  My sister hosted us and made a few appetizers and I was in charge of the birthday girl's dessert.  I tried a new recipe and it was fantastic!  I made a skillet apple pie.  I found the recipe in my September 2011 issue of Southern Living and I would HIGHLY recommend it. It was very easy and one of the best apple pies I've ever had!  Here's the recipe.

I kinda, sorta think mine looks better than the picture with the recipe  :)

Later Friday night, my best friend, Laura, and her husband, Aaron, arrived for the weekend!  We had a great night of staying in, having some cocktails (Skinnygirl Margarita for the ladies and Octoberfest beer for the guys), and catching up.

Saturday was a beautiful fall day!  Too beautiful not to eat lunch outside!  The four of us headed over to Milk & Honey Cafe and ate some delicious sandwiches!

Best friends since kindergarten...love & miss Laura so much!

After lunch, we took the train up to my sister's for Lauren's 3rd birthday party.  We enjoyed being able to have a few adult beverages on the train ride (minus one getting accidentally thrown away :).  We helped decorate and then next thing we knew it was time to party!

The birthday girl in an outfit Uncle Jon and I got for her.

My mom's genius holder for her wine glass!!

Lauren loved jumping in the bounce house (so did Uncle Jon).

Pink shirts for the pink themed birthday party!

Love that purple frosting!

Hanging out with the birthday girl!

A hodgepodge

*Update:  I also freshened up my Lovely Reads page recently and you should check it out!  If I've left anyone off I'm sorry and PLEASE let me know!  Send me an email (it's listed on the top right side of the blog) and I'll make sure it gets adjusted!

1.  Yesterday evening I received an email from my awesome blog friend Katie at Oui, Bien Sur!  I had won her extra Erin Condren planner!  I am so excited and will be anxiously awaiting the package!

photo from Katie's blog

2.  Jon and his "assistant" made me dinner last night!  I had to present at Junior League so it was wonderful to come home and have dinner on the table (that wasn't a frozen pizza or mac and cheese...Jon's specialties).  It was a delicious pasta dish with Italian bread on the side and a glass of wine.

When I walked in, Wilma greeted me at the door.  Jon had put one of my aprons on her and she looked so cute!  Jon also decided to sport one of my aprons while cooking.  They made me crack up!

3.  A little housekeeping...  I have such great followers and readers and I love reading your comments...I really do!  There are many comments and questions I'd love to be able to respond to by email, but I can only do that if you have your account set up that way.  I posted this tutorial a couple of months back, but I wanted to provide a refresher for those who are interested.

4.  We are going to the Tigers vs. White Sox game tonight and I can't wait!  Of course I'm a Tigers fan...I am from Michigan after all.  I will be sporting my Brandon Inge t-shirt and cheering them on!  We scored tickets for only $13.50 a piece.  Yup, you read that correctly!  I was so excited when I received an email yesterday saying Justin Verlander would be pitching!  Sorry dad...wish you could come with us!

Pay it forward

Friday evening Jon and I went out for Thai.  We decided to each get an entree and a side of chicken fried rice so we'd be able to take leftovers home for lunch on Saturday.  We left with a doggie bag of pad see ew (2 half orders) and 3/4 of our order of fried rice.  On our rainy walk home we were so proud of ourselves to think ahead and order more for dinner so we'd have plenty of leftovers.  We were headed home to watch St. Elmo's Fire and relax on the couch.

We were almost home when we walked by a group of 5 hobos.  They are pretty common during the summer in our neighborhood.  They are typically in their 20's, really dirty (like just dirt caked on their skin), most of them have dogs, and they are nice, but keep to themselves.  We got to the stop light and Jon turned to me and said, "should we give them our leftovers?"  It didn't matter what my answer was, Jon had already turned around and was headed back to the hobos.  We walked up and asked if they wanted some Thai and the look on their faces said it all.  They were so thankful.  They kept thanking us as we walked away.  This was one situation where I really learned from him.

I love Jon and I am proud of him everyday, but Friday night I was something really special.  Should I be surprised my husband did this random act of kindness?  No, I shouldn't.  He really is one of the nicest, most patient people I know.  For example, he always lets other cars in the lane while I usually try and speed up.  I have taken some cues from him over the last 4 months and I'm learning to become a happier, calmer person.

Oh, and we had pb & j sandwiches for lunch on Saturday.  :)

9/11

I will never forget where I was 10 years ago.  It was a beautiful fall morning.  The sun was shining as I walked across campus to my classes.  I was a freshman at Central Michigan University.  I came back to my dorm for my morning break.  I thought I'd check my email, do some reading, grab lunch, and then head to my on-campus job.  As I checked my email, the world changed for me.  My mom had sent her daily email, but on that day she told me there had been a plane crash in NYC.  She followed up with a little more information and told me to turn on my tv.  So, I did.  I couldn't believe what I saw.  I remember feeling so many emotions.  It was horrible.  I just wanted to be with my family in case things continued to happen.  The rest of the day was not normal at all.  Campus ended up closing early so I didn't work my entire shift.  My sister called (she was a senior...we went to the same school) and said she and her roommates were going to dinner (it was one of her roommate's birthday) and asked if I wanted to go along with my best friend.  We all met at Benningan's.  It was such a strange dinner.  I think we all felt a sort of comfort being together, we couldn't turn our heads from the tvs, we didn't know what the world would become, and yet we had a birthday to celebrate.

My story is nothing compared to what many went through, my life changed minimally compared to so many other's, but we were all affected in one way or another.  I will never forget that day.  My prayers are with those who lost loved ones related to 9/11/01 in one way or another.
